The Minister of Higher Education witnesses the celebration of the completion of 1,000 liver transplant operations
Today, Saturday, 5/20/2023, Dr. Ayman Ashour, Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, witnessed Mansoura University’s celebration of the completion of 1,000 liver transplant operations.
This has happened since the program was established in May 2004, achieving a record success rate ranging from 88% to 92%, making the university’s liver transplant program rank third in the world after South Korea and India, in the presence of Dr. Reda Hegazy, Minister of Education and Technical Education, Dr. Ayman Mukhtar, Governor of Dakahlia, and Dr. Sherif Khater, President of the University, Dr. Mustafa Refaat, Secretary of the Supreme Council of Universities, and Dr. Mahmoud Saqr, President of the Academy of Scientific Research and Technology, and Dr. Mr. Abdel Khaleq, former Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, Dr. Al-Hilali El-Sherbiny, former Minister of Education, and Dr. Ahmed Gamal El-Din Moussa, former Minister of Education, and a number of university presidents, leaders of the Ministry of Higher Education, university vice presidents, college deans, and executive and popular leaders in Dakahlia Governorate.
During the celebration activities, Dr. praised Ayman Ashour praised the achievement achieved by the Liver Transplant Program at Mansoura University, performing 1,000 liver transplant operations with distinguished success rates, and competing with international centers in the same field, adding that the Ministry is sparing no effort in supporting the program and continuing the series of achievements, especially since it serves a large segment of patients both inside Egypt. Or in Arab and African countries.
The Minister explained the Ministry’s interest in monitoring the performance of university hospitals and their medical and health services, as one of the basic pillars of providing health services to citizens, noting that the Ministry includes 120 university hospitals, and that these hospitals enjoy the trust of citizens. For his part, Dr. Sherif Khater gave a presentation about the achievements of Mansoura University and its achievement of advanced positions in international classifications and the obtaining of accreditation by many colleges, pointing to the projects undertaken by the university and its success in achieving the elements of the national strategy for higher education and scientific research.
Dr. explained. Sherif said that liver transplant operations are carried out by a distinguished medical team headed by Dr. Mohamed Abdel Wahab, professor of liver surgery and supervisor of the liver transplant team, at the Digestive Surgery Center at Mansoura University, noting that the unit includes 20 beds, pointing out that the center is at the top of the global list. For the distinguished medical teams in liver transplantation, he stressed that liver transplantation at Mansoura University is an Egyptian success story achieved with state support, and was carried out by a distinguished medical team that includes 28 doctors from various specialties.

Mohamed Abdel Wahab, supervisor of the liver transplant team at the university, gave a presentation about the emergence of the liver transplant project at the university’s Digestive Surgery Center, explaining its role in eliminating waiting lists, and the state bearing all treatment expenses for liver transplant patients in the waiting list program. He also discussed the steps of establishing a new building for liver transplantation. On an area of 700 square metres, it is the first of its kind in the Middle East and Africa, specializing in the treatment of liver diseases and transplantation. It aims to perform 5 operations per week instead of two operations per week, and to complete more than 200 cases annually.
This number is considered unprecedented in any liver transplant center globally from living donors, as well as following up on patients before and after the procedure to avoid complications for patients and accommodating a larger number of patients from sisterly Arab countries, as well as training medical personnel on liver transplantation from Egypt and Arab-African countries. .
At the conclusion of the celebration, the Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research honored a group of doctors from the Digestive Surgery Center, members of the liver transplant program team, and some university leaders.
Dr. Adel Abdel Ghaffar, the media advisor and official spokesman for the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research, confirmed that liver transplant statistics at Mansoura University indicate that 80 surgeries were performed on Arab citizens, most of whom are from Yemen, Libya, Palestine, Syria, Iraq and Senegal, and they are treated financially like Egyptian citizens, and 30 transplant cases were performed on children. The rest of the surgeries were performed on Egyptian citizens from all governorates, and the liver transplant team applies strict standards for donors who are relatives up to the third and fourth degree.
